Globe World Flavours earns its stripes
By Ellen Egan
Although a rockin’ patio is pretty crucial for Charlottetown restaurants in the summer, the patio can only take you so far. You’ve got to have just the right elements to back it up.
Entering the Victoria Row “scene” a few years ago, teetering smack in the middle of successful niche restaurants, Globe World Flavours made a less than subtle entrance with its bright lights, loud music and swanky patio furniture.
As we all know, Islanders can be a little “stuck in their ways.” Thankfully, this wasn’t the case. Islanders and visitors alike quickly warmed up to the restaurant’s unique concept. It has proven itself as a strong competitor for all things lunch, dinner and nightlife related. And with a menu boasting items from across the “globe” twisted with local elements for a relatively reasonable price, I believe they’ve hit the nail on the head.
Since I’d never truly experienced the Globe for it’s culinary worth, I approached my latest culinary endeavour equipped with fresh eyes, an eager palate and two equally excited dinner guests.
While sipping on a personal favourite white wine, Sartori Pinot Grigio, the sight of fresh bread was more than welcome to combat our state of hunger. A round of mussels—three different sauces: coconut curry, white wine & garlic, and tomato basil—were not far behind, along with their signature PEI Potato Martini. I can actually still taste the combination of aged cheddar, sundried tomato, roasted garlic confit, bacon and scallions.
Simply delicious.
Next on the docket came the opportunity to test out one of the Globe’s newest summer menu features: Red Bell Pepper Jambalaya (in both meat and vegetarian varieties). With the perfect combination of heat, flavour and texture, I can see this tasty delight just flying out of the kitchen this season.
As if the first two rounds weren’t enough, the main courses soon appeared. Between the three of us there were: “Goat Cheese and Sundried Tomato Stuffed Chicken,” “Seared Scallops,” and the night’s feature, “Steak Sandwich topped with Bruschetta and Goat Cheese;” all complete with tasty salads. Each was paired with savoury sauces and unique flavour combinations.
Considering the amount of food devoured, we finished feeling full, but not in the “I’m going to need a wheelbarrow to take me out of here” sort of feeling. And just as we thought the food was enough, a delightful musical set began to warm up, spurring us on to try a fruity cocktail on the warm summer evening.
I later learned this musical set would be a staple on Wednesday nights this summer: a duo called “He Sang, She Sang” involving different male and female performers each week.
I’m quite certain that if prior commitments didn’t loom over us, we could have stayed on the whole evening.
So, there it is. Well done, Globe. Yet another restaurant has caught my heart – does that make me some sort of culinary-floozy?
If loving PEI food is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
Happy Eating!

G! Whiz: You Can’t Stop the Tweet
This summer, PEI will play host to both British royalty and country music royalty, not to mention Celebrity Apprentice royalty (no, not Dionne Warwick – I’m talkin’ about Meat Loaf).
With so many famous people infiltrating the Island you may be tempted to follow them around, waiting for the right moment to initiate a handshake, buy them a drink at the bar or plant a recording device in their hotel with the intention of later selling the nude footage to TMZ. With today’s overly sensitive celebs dishing out more restraining orders than autographed glossies (sorry Robert Pattinson), it’s far easier to put down the binoculars and sign up for a Twitter account. Twitter gives fans an unprecedented amount of access to celebrities, particularly if your preferred celeb happens to be a fame whore.
(Fame Whore Litmus Test: Divide total number of photos of them frolicking on the beach by the number of times he/she has appeared on “Glee” and multiply that by their fragrances.)
Need help learning how to Tweet? Ask a 10-year old. Need help learning which celebrities you can follow on Twitter? You’ve come to the right place:
Gwyneth Paltrow: (@gwynethpaltrow) The most recent addition to my celeb-ridden Twitter feed, younger audiences may know Gwyneth as the “Chandler’s roommate Eddie” of Glee (a character they refuse to get rid of, despite being painfully one-dimensional and unfunny). Older audiences will be more familiar with GOOP, her “lifestyle” blog (if your “lifestyle” happens to include exfoliating with organic demerara sugar and diamond shavings). Her tweets are just as amazingly pretentious as she is.
Sample Tweet: “Looking for tutor for kids. $195K per day. Must speak french, lebanese, farsi, mandarin, creole, finnish and ebonics.”
Amanda Bynes: (@MsAmandaBynes_) The star of such classic films as “She’s the Man” and “What a Girl Wants”, what this girl wants is attention. In between fishing for compliments, Amanda famously retired from acting via Twitter, then unretired (not a real word) when she realized that no one cared.
Sample Tweet: “I’m unretired
”
Tweet: (@Tweet) Just kidding! Ironically, the singer Tweet of “Oops, Oh My” fame is not on Twitter. Seems like a missed opportunity if you ask me.
Justin Bieber: (@JustinBieber) The most followed man on Twitter (I used the term “man” loosely), the Biebs has over 10 million followers. In fact, the day he cut his hair from his signature swoosh into a cropped pixie, he lost 80, 000 followers, solidifying his position as a modern-day Keri Russell. Most celebrities on Twitter retweet compliments about themselves, but no one does this as often and unabashedly as Justin Bieber.
Sample Tweet: “Someone approached me today and asked if I was that chick from the L Word…”
When Heidi’s not unabashedly following hoards of celebs on Twitter (@HeidiBrander), she’s writing about them each month in G! Magazine.

Myth: If you want a celebrity body, it’s going to cost you time and money (and lots of it!)
The Myth and The Madness
Sound too good to be true? Then it probably is…but man, we hope not! Ryan Cairns CSEP-CPT dispels the myths of fitness and sets us straight on the path to looking (and feeling) good.
Celebrities. Whether you love them or hate them, they’re here to stay.
Celebrities have a major impact on what we wear, drive, read, eat, and so much more. Everyone wants to look like his or her favourite celebrity; that usually means in the fitness department, too.
Celebrities almost always have to be in great shape for their roles (with the exception of Tom Hanks in Cast Away), whether it’s to be attractive to the audience like the Taylor Lautner in Twilight, or to prepare them for challenging stunts like Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia. They have access to some of the world’s greatest trainers who make customized fitness plans specially suited to their needs. Plus, they have more time to work out and lots of money to spend on getting the results they want to achieve. They’re motivated to look good because they will be seen by millions of people.
I’ll tell you right now you don’t need much time or money (besides celebrities, who has much of either anyway?). Motivation is KEY to getting the results you want!
Here are two celebrity workouts I have personally tried and found great success with. You can do the same – just find what motivates you!
The 300 Workout
This workout was designed for Gerard Butler and the actors of the movie 300. The movie is about a famous battle in Ancient Greece, so the actors had to get very ripped and toned. The workout is very advanced so I will put an easier version to try as well.
Do this workout three times a week. There is no scheduled rest between exercises.
1. Pull-ups 25 reps
2. Deadlifts 50 reps
3. Push-ups 50 reps
4. Body weight squat jumps 50 reps
5. V snaps 50 reps
6. Dumbbell push presses 50 reps
7. Pull-ups 25 reps
Modified version
1. Assisted Pull-ups 25 reps
2. Body weight squats 50 reps
3. Push-ups 25 reps
4. Jumping jacks 50 reps
5. Mountain Climbers 50 reps
6. Bootstrappers 25 reps
7. Assisted chin-ups 25 reps
The Spartacus Workout
This workout regime was created for the actors of the TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
Do this workout three times a week. Do 10 exercises in a circuit; perform each exercise for 60 seconds, and rest 15 seconds between each. Do the circuit 2-3 times.
1. Body weight squats
2. Mountain Climbers
3. One arm Dumbbell swing or kettlebell swing (30 seconds each side)
4. T-twists
5. Split jump lunges
6. Bent over row
7. Side lunges
8. Push-ups/ and or push-up row
9. Walking lunges with a twist
10. Dumbbell push press
Both workouts are challenging, but they will guarantee results if you stick with them. You can make them easier by doing less reps, resting longer or picking a modified version of the challenging exercises. Start slow and build your way up to do the whole workout.
Stop wanting to be like your favourite celebrity and start looking like them!
