I’d Rather be Patio-ing!

By Ellen Egan

Please allow me to introduce a new word I’ve recently added to my vocabulary: Patio-ing.

So, just for the record, I decided to consult the ever credible, online Urban Dictionary to define this new word. To my delight (followed by mild disappointment), patio-ing is the act of going out for drinks on a patio.

Thanks for enlightening us UD, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Sun. Music. Beer (or beverage of choice). What more could you ask for? Well, a lot, apparently. Our high standards may explain why we have such exceptional patios on PEI. Hell, we even have a whole street dedicated to this exact cause.  Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past six years or are just now losing your PEI virginity, you’ve likely indulged in downtown Charlottetown’s Victoria Row experience.

Simply wander “the Row” and you’ll become intoxicated off local musicians filling the air with music day and night. Bring out your Italian side for a day at Castello’s. Find your inner Chocolatier at Chocolate Elements. Savour authentic Island seafood at Fishbones. Sip cosmos like Carrie Bradshaw at the Globe. Or appreciate truly good coffee at Café Diem.

Throughout the rest of Charlottetown, it’s not hard to find a street-side patio to share a drink and a meal. The options are endless. Test out your Irish roots at The Old Triangle, quench your thirst with novelty size beers at Hunters Ale House, enjoy a few appetizers at Rum Runners, and taste seafood fresh off the boat at Water-Prince Corner Shop.

For a little finer dining, Sims Steakhouse, Off Broadway, St. James Gate, and Sirenella’s offer street-side seating in the refreshing outdoors. It really is the best of both worlds.

Moving ocean-side now, watch the boats come and go from the Peakes Quay deck or hoe into a lobster feed at Lobster on the Wharf.

But Charlottetown doesn’t lay claim to all of the Island’s notable patios.  Head out on an adventure and stop in at Ship to Shore in Darnley, The Dunes in Brackley Beach, Blue Mussel Café in North Rustico, Olde Glasgow Mill overlooking the River Clyde, or Clam Diggers in Georgetown, just to name a few.

Now that the summer is still young, get out and test-drive some patios yourself. You won’t regret it.
Happy Patio-ing!

The Myth and the Madness (June 2010)

Written by admin on September 8, 2010 - 0 Comments

Sound too good to be true?  Then it probably is – but man, we hope not!  Ryan Cairns dispels the myths of fitness and sets us straight on the path to looking (and feeling) good.

Myth: If you’re not feeling pain during your workouts, then you’re not getting results.

How hard should you work out in the gym?

Should you produce just a little sweat and an increased heart rate or should you have the puke bucket ready after every set?

Some people believe you need to ‘feel the burn’ during workouts in order to get results, but what exactly is ‘the burn’ and how do you know when you’ve worked out hard enough to achieve your fitness goals?

First off, ‘the burn’ is a build up of lactic acid in the muscles. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise. Muscles get fatigued after short bursts of intense exercise or even long periods of moderate exercise. Lactic acid levels rise, causing a burning sensation. The levels go down during rest periods. Fitter individuals will need less rest while less fit ones will need more. This sensation is totally natural.

On the other hand, if you feel a sharp, searing pain in the muscle, this is a sign of something much more serious and you should stop your workout. Chances are you tore a muscle or pinched a nerve, neither of which is good. Go home and R.I.C.E. That stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation – not Uncle Ben’s.

So how hard should you workout? Well, that depends on what you want to achieve from your workout. You don’t always have to workout until you can’t lift your arms in the shower to wash your hair, or not be able to turn the steering wheel in the Zellers parking lot and almost hit a car (been there, done that). We don’t usually feel muscle pain until 24 to 48 hours after exercise. This is called Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS).

If you want to get the most out of your exercise program, try this:

-For weight loss and toning (endurance), do 12-20 reps of an activity, 3-4 sets, resting 30 seconds between each set.  I suggest doing a circuit.
-For muscle hypertrophy (muscle size), do 8-12 reps, 3-4 sets, resting 45-90 seconds between sets.
-For strength, do 1-6 reps, resting 2-5 minutes between sets.

For any of these workouts, the last few reps should be very difficult, if not bringing on muscle failure (not being able to do another rep). If you find yourself exceeding 20 reps, increase the weight. It should be a challenge.

Grip and rip it!
