Make Winter Work for You!
Snap out of the mid-winter snowdaze and get winteractive!
By G! Staff
If your idea of enjoying winter is staying indoors until it’s over, here’s a newsflash: you’re not a bear, so hibernation is not an option. Rather than curse the snow, why not try embracing it? A good dose of winter activity not only slaps the sleepy right out of you, but getting active is also a great way to bring the whole family together. You might even see those extra inches you gained over the Christmas holidays finally start to disappear! By getting winteractive, everybody wins.
Across PEI, thousands of Islanders are donning their finest winter attire and getting involved in activities such as walking, hiking, snowshoeing and running thanks to the community-based program go!PEI. This program aims to educate and support Islanders in making a healthy lifestyle change for the long-term. And the best part of this program is that everything they do is free. Yes, free. Go!PEI offers a variety of beginner and intermediate physical activities and healthy eating programs in 16 communities across the Island. And in case you missed it the first time, they’re free.

One of the major initiatives go!PEI has on the go January 22 to 30 is their Skate Days happening across the Island in 18 arenas. When was the last time you laced up your ice skates? Shake the dust off of those bad boys and get ready for a fun afternoon on ice. Don’t worry if you haven’t skated since elementary school – sure, you’ll have Bambi legs for the first few minutes, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be flying! Go!PEI will also have healthy snacks and prize giveaways, as well as a Healthy Food Drive for each community’s local food bank. Giving back has never been so fun!
You may think of running as a summer activity, but running is something you can do all year round. Don’t let the snow deter your healthy lifestyle efforts – if anything, the cool, brisk air and snow underfoot can work to your advantage. Go!PEI’s massively successful ‘Learn to Run’ (L2R) programs have helped hundreds of Islanders find their inner athlete. This 10 week walk-to-run program gradually teaches participants how to run a 5k distance, and all graduates of L2R have taken part in an official PEI Roadrunners 5k race.
“When our L2R group began, no one had ever run before. In fact, most participants were not regular exercisers,” says Dana Titian-MacLeod, go!Cornwall’s L2R leader. “After completing the program, all 18 people can now run a continuous 5k distance without stopping.”

By adopting a healthy lifestyle that consists of healthy eating and regular doses of activity, those winter ‘blahs’ will become a thing of the past. It’s time to make a change for the better, and the great folks at go!PEI can help make that happen. From January 22 to March 1, go!PEI has lots of great winter activities planned to keep you active, healthy and enjoying the wintery weather. The snow’s not going anywhere anytime soon, so go outside and get winteractive!

Balancing Act (Jan/Feb 2011)
Keeping the love alive in your wardrobe and your relationship
Photography and Story By Kimberly Rashed
There’s no question that men and women have very different views on, let’s face it – everything. What men find appealing in a woman is, of course, one.
I’m no Dr. Phil, but I have come to learn a few things over the years. Us ladies have to wear a lot of different hats in the relationship. We’re expected to be the best friend, the wife, the sexy vixen mistress (wink, wink), the mother of their children and – let’s face it – sometimes their mother. And on top of all that we do, we have to look like a million bucks, even though most days we feel more like loose change.
Every day, you get up, shower, style your hair, apply makeup, squeeze into that pencil skirt and heels and whisk out the door. All of this seems to happen without a thought, really. He briefly gets a glimpse as you dash (with tots in toe) out the door. But considering most men can get ready for their day while they’re still half asleep, he probably didn’t even notice. You arrive through the door to the office and by 9:15, you realize that the crotch of your pantyhose is at your knees. This is going to be a long day!
By noon, you are kicking those heels off under your desk and avoiding bathroom breaks for the rest of the day because you refuse to put those damn ‘demons from hell’ back on. You manage to squeeze your feet into them long enough for the drive home but heaven help anyone who is within throwing distance when you get in the door.
You’ve spent your day continuously whipping that sexy fallen tendril of hair out of your eye-line, avoiding breathing in that pencil skirt, re-situating the bra, hiking those pantyhose and researching who really invented the high heel. It’s been debated, but you know it was a man. Needless to say, you didn’t get any work done.
All you’ve been thinking about all day is getting into something comfy and cozying up next to your man, maybe by the fire? Of which will contain that bra, pencil skirt, pair of pantyhose and those dreaded demon heels.
Comfy to you looks like this – hair pulled back, makeup removed, some sweats and one of his oversized shirts. He thinks that’s cute right? Not so much. Your daily evening ‘uniform’ has become much more of a snore than a turn on.
I know it’s not really fair. It’s such a double standard, right? He doesn’t shave for a few days and we find his scruff sexy. We don’t shave our legs for a few days and let’s just say it’s the farthest thing from sexy you can get. Yeah, yeah, women’s lib and all that…I’m not saying throw your wants and needs completely out the window. I’m just saying that you throw him a bone once in awhile.
Though men and women don’t always agree on wardrobe choices, it’s important to keep him in mind when it comes to what you wear when you’re together. After all, he’s the one who’s attention you want to keep, right? Though it’s all completely understandable. You’ve had a long hard day, but why should the rest of the world be getting the hot version of you everyday while he’s the one that really matters?
Of course he loves you for the good, the bad and the ugly. We just need to remember to keep the ratio of all three in check. You just may gain some leverage, gals. Something sparkly, a nice dinner…heck, I’d settle with keeping the dirty laundry off the floor some days!

SiFTcast in Print: An Alarming Discovery (Jan/Feb 2011)
By SiFTcast
Happy New Year everybody! We hope that you all had a safe and happy holiday. We also hope that everyone had success in shipping and mailing gifts over the holidays, and that they arrived on time without complication.
Recently, we had discussed some of the difficulties in shipping broken electronics back under warranty. Kris had his own experience with trying to ship a camera back for repair that ended up taking months before he got it back.
That led us to the story of a California man, Richard Lynch, who shipped his broken laptop back for repairs via UPS, but when his package arrived back at the manufacturer, all that was in the box was a phone book and some cans of pop.
Confused, upset and angered by what happened, he took matters into his own hands and took another package to his local UPS depot. However instead of a laptop in this box, he rigged it with a car alarm, and then shot video of himself shaking and dropping the box to prove that it would only trigger the system if the box had been opened.
Lynch dropped off his package and went back to his car in the parking lot to wait and see what would happen. Ten minutes later, he had confirmation that his package had in fact been opened thanks to a hidden electronic device in the box to transmit any sound. From the parking lot, he heard the alarm going off at full volume!
Armed with a video camera, Lynch re-entered the store to confront employees about his open package however, the employees stated that the box was dropped, not opened. (Keeping in mind that he had shot video earlier proving that the alarm would not be triggered to go off by dropping or shaking the package).
The police were called and they said they would investigate the matter further, stating that it is also possible that the alarm was set off before the box was opened. So they opened it to see what was making the noise. The owner of the UPS depot said that while this story is very strange, he did agree to meet with Lynch to discuss what had happened.
Good luck to Lynch in getting to the bottom of this and we hope that you all have much better luck in your shipping adventures!
As Kris says, that will do it for another article of SiFTcast. You can check us out at SiFTcast.com, send us an email at info@siftcast.com or follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/SiFTcast . We’ll see you next month!
