Girlfriends

It’s been recently reported that PEI is one of the happiest places to live in Canada, and quite frankly, it’s no surprise that it has nothing to do with money, power or status.

Much of what makes us happy comes from our relationships, and as women, there’s no greater source of happiness than what we get from our closest girlfriends.

Four women – Monia, Kendi, Sue and Rufina – give us their take on the importance of girlfriends in our lives.  As we start a brand new year, think of your own girlfriends and what they mean to you.  If that means reconnecting over drinks and laughter, then by all means, do it.  Nothing would make us happier.

Monia’s take:
Woman has proven herself from the prehistoric cave to the Mad Men era.  Even today, as an independent ‘fashionista’ who has shown her middle finger to unworthy ex-husbands, she is still vowing fidelity not only to her children, but also to her other precious gems: shoes.  We can honestly and selfishly say life is good.

But hold on a second.  Let’s take a few lines to point out the glue that holds us together.  Something we rarely take for granted but don’t mention on a regular basis are our girls, our sisters, our partners in crime!  Indeed, let’s honour and share a few words on girlfriends.

The ones who share giggles, who call us after our worst breakups, who dared to tell us that our lipstick didn’t match our outfit.  Here’s to the girlfriends who held our hair up after an endless night of ‘eau de vie’.  To the precious ones who stand by us publicly when we’re wrong but don’t hesitate to call us on our b**s** away from the ears of strangers.

Everyone needs a place to belong.  Take away the lipstick, the ‘hubbies’, the fashion – even the shoes (well, maybe not the shoes), and your girlfriends remain.  The comfort of their hugs and their voices joined with yours in laughter, or the soothing sound of their encouraging words makes everything seem better.

Kendi’s take:
I grew up in a household full of boys.  I became accustomed to constantly being around them but I always craved feminine company. I had a great childhood and have some great shared memories with the boys, but there are so many things that girlfriends add to your life.

Girlfriends are great for going to chick flicks with, shopping, watching reality shows, eating chocolate, planning your future wedding, being a part of that future wedding and my favourite – girl talk.  As simple as it sounds, it is essential to our well-being.  There is just this amazing way that girls understand each other.  Girl talk can range from food to movies, drinks to men, sex to shoes and best of all, emotions.  How we feel, why we feel a certain way, and sometimes just to cuddle and let our emotions out.

Boys are great, but girlfriends are a necessity.  They spice up life in a way only girls can, and I definitely appreciate my girls.

Sue’s take:
I grew up a tomboy.  I even looked like a boy until the third grade as my mother was partial to the mushroom cut of the 80’s.  I was always ‘one of the boys’ and I connected with other girls of the same nature.  We were baffled by the need for make-up, high heels and the latest fashions.

It really wasn’t until I gave birth that the gap between me and other women became much smaller; it was an instant connection with the female kind.   We would discuss how amazing our babies were and shared our sometimes-torturous childbirth stories.  There was a definite link between me and ‘them’.  I was now a woman and soon began to want to dress and feel more feminine.

I’ve opened myself up to women and discovered we ROCK!  I love my girls; we laugh, cry and sometimes growl together.  We are honest with each other and they are helping me with my journey into womanhood.  For example I now own a pair of heels and I might even buy make-up this year.  That’s right – I don’t own make-up…unless you count my treasured Burt’s Bees lip-gloss!

Rufina’s take:
We are surrounded by men and the rest of the animal world.  To get a place in the sun, we have to fight for it.  And by ‘fight’, I mean be strong and feisty.  Seems like a dark picture doesn’t it?  There are many different cultural aspects that determine the position of women in society.  I will open up a little bit about mine.

Russia…sounds so exotic.  Here’s the thing – to be a real lady in Russia, you have to prove that you are able to do anything.  From rocking the sexiest fashion trends to being an Alexander of Rome; balancing work and home…how can we stay a lady in such a horse race?

Here’s the secret:  girlfriends.  It sounds so simple doesn’t it?

A girlfriend is the twin we never had.  Maybe they are completely opposite to us, but often the closest people to us. Girlfriends will always give you an honest answer.  They might not be the best advisors at times but they are definitely worth listening to.  Girlfriends know how we love secrets.  And when we feel the urge to share those secrets, it’s with our “twin sistas”.

It’s therapy to meet over cup of tea and share everything we’ve been holding inside. Whether it’s a home, work or school issue we always seek the support of our girlfriends.  When we’re sad, we get a bowl of ice cream served with love and a warm hug.  A broken heart brings brave offers of sweet payback.  Even if we know those promises won’t actually be carried out, they make us feel good.

Girlfriends make you laugh.  They are your teammates, your army,  your conscience.  They are your secret escape to paradise.

When the opportunity came along to get singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Tim Chaisson to be our G! cover model, we jumped on it.  After all, he’s a busy guy with a jam-packed touring schedule.  Before he headed back on tour with East Coast rockers The Trews, I sat down with the Music PEI Video of the Year award nominee to learn more about the boy from Bear River.

On touring with The Trews: “The highlight of the year for me, personally.  To travel across the country and not worry about anything, just go out, play and do our thing – it’s been great.”

On his first Music PEI Awards Gala:
“I used to play in a Celtic band with my brothers and cousins, and that was the very first year they had the Music PEI Awards.  I remember it just kind of clicked with everybody that it was really neat that there’s actually a music awards show on PEI and everyone had a shot at being nominated.”

On being at the 2011 Music PEI Week:
“Yeah hopefully.  We’ll probably do something for sure.  I know we’ll definitely be around for it.  It’s always a good time, all the showcases that go on, all the shows and the actual awards show, which is always a blast too.”

On being an Islander:
“I love being based in PEI.  A lot of people are like ‘Oh, why don’t you move to Toronto or elsewhere?’ but I’m like ‘Oh, if you lived in PEI, you’d know.’  It’s awesome here.”

On his bandmates – Tian Wigmore, Brien McCarthy, and Nat Lamoureux: “Great guys and fantastic musicians – if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am!”

On his New Year’s resolution:
“I really want to write a lot more.  I always write and I always play at home, but I really want to buckle down and really write more and have an abundance of songs rather than ‘just enough’.”
